Frequently Asked Questions.

Is there striking in BJJ?

No. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling style incorporating takedowns, control positions, and submissions through various joint manipulations and chokes. We will have specialty classes on self defense and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) where we combine striking with BJJ for a more complete system.

Do I have to be in great shape to start training?

Nope, come as you are. Training in BJJ and Kickboxing will get you into fantastic shape. You will stretch and strengthen muscles that you didn’t know you have by performing movements and positions that are very difficult (if not impossible) to replicate in a traditional gym.

What are the belts in BJJ?

There are only 5 belts in the adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu system: White, Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black (technically there is a Coral belt as well but you must be an active black belt for 30 years to achieve this!). This is far fewer belts than many martial arts systems, as such a longer period of time is spent at each belt. A BJJ practitioner will earn 4 stripes on their belt as their skill progresses prior to being promoted to the next belt.

The youth system has 13 belts: White, Gray/White, Gray, Gray/Black, Yellow/White, Yellow, Yellow/Black, Orange/White, Orange, Orange/Black, Green/White, Green, and Green/Black. As with the adult system, there are 4 stripes within each belt prior to promotion. At age 16 a youth student can be promoted into the adult system but may begin training with the adult classes prior to that with instructor’s approval.

How long does it take to earn a Black Belt in BJJ?

Everyone comes to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with different natural abilities and backgrounds, but typically 9-12 years of consistent training is required to earn a Black Belt.

Do you offer kids’ classes?

Yes! We have launched our Kids BJJ classes with 2 different age groups: 4-9 year olds on Mondays and Wednesdays and 10-13 year olds on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Check our schedule page for detailed information and updates.

Can I drop my child off to a kids’ class and leave?

No. We require an adult guardian to remain present during their child’s class. In addition to liability reasons, we believe that this helps set a young student’s mind at ease during their first few classes but also allows the guardians the opportunity to see what the students are learning and why.

Can I just drop into a Kickboxing class to spar?

Sorry but No. We encourage martial artists from all styles to come train with us but the safety of our students is always our top priority. Anyone interested in sparring must receive approval/permission from the instructor.

What is “Rolling”?

Rolling is the BJJ version of sparring. At the end of each class we leave time for a few rounds (3-10 minutes in length each round) to either test the techniques/positions covered in class (known as “Situational Rounds”) in a live setting or to just free roll with your fellow classmates. Unless the class is Competition themed, no one is trying to “Win” but instead we are all testing our own techniques and strategies against an actively resisting opponent. This ability to pressure test against active resistance is what sets BJJ apart from many styles. We know whether our techniques work or not because we try them on someone who is non-compliant.

Do I have to Roll? Is Rolling Safe?

We don’t force anyone to roll but we do strongly encourage it as it is greatly beneficial to the advancement of your Jiu-Jitsu. Our coaches will always monitor in-class rolling to ensure the safety of every student.

Our students are encouraged to tailor rolling intensity based on their own needs. On our mats, we communicate and collaborate with our classmates so that everyone is able to learn and train happily and safely.

What do I wear for a No-Gi class?

Athletic shorts (no zippers or rivets, preferably no pockets), t shirts or spandex (known as “rash guards”). Athletic supporters and cups are recommended for men but not required. Leggings are fine. Men must wear shorts over spats (spandex leg coverings). Whatever you wear just make sure that its clean :-)

Do I need to have a gi for my first class?

We will do our best to provide a loaner gi (uniform) for your first week of classes only. After that you must bring your own. You can purchase from our stock or anywhere else but it must be a BJJ gi. Karate, Kung Fu, Aikido, and Tae Kwon Do uniforms are not allowed for safety reasons. Even Judo gis have sleeves that are too short for BJJ. A free gi is included if you pay for your first 3 months up front.

Do I need to have boxing gloves or shin guards for my first class?

Just like with the Gi, we will do our best to provide loaner gloves and shin guards for your first week of classes only. After that you must bring your own. Shin guards should cover both the shin and top of the foot. Full boxing gloves are required (MMA gloves are solely for MMA and Self Defense specialty classes). Hand wraps are optional but encouraged for your safety. Protective cups are required for male participants. Mouth guards are required for sparring. A free pair of boxing gloves OR shin guards is included if you pay for your first 3 months up front (instead of a free gi, not in addition to).

What if I just want to train MMA and not BJJ/Kickboxing?

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a sport that blends multiple styles together. Until you have a basic understanding of both striking and grappling you will be unable to combine them. Stances and some techniques must be modified to be effective in MMA but being proficient in BJJ and Kickboxing will allow you to make those transitions more easily.

What do I call the instructor?

Traditionally BJJ black belt teachers are referred to as “Professor” and those who haven’t earned their black belt yet are called “Coach”. We are pretty laid back and won’t mind if you call us by our first names though.
